Drouet, Jean-Baptiste

Drouet, Jean-Baptiste
(1763-1824)
   political figure
Born in Sainte-Ménehould, where his father was postmaster, Jean-Baptiste Drouet recognized King louis XVI when he attempted to flee France (June 21, 1791) and, proceeding to Varennes, raised the alarm, resulting in the king and the royal family's arrest. Deputy for the Maine in the Convention, Drouet fought in the war and was captured at Maubeuge by the Austrians (1793), who exchanged him for the king's daughter (December 1796). A member of the Council of Five Hundred during the Directory, he took part in the babeuf Conspiracy (1796). Imprisoned in the Abbaye, he escaped and emigrated. During the first empire he returned to France and was named prefect of Sainte-Ménehould. Proscribed as a regicide during the Restoration, he remained in hiding under the name Merger.
